By CretaHub  ·  10 min read  ·  Chania, Crete

Chania isn't just beautiful to look at — it's built for adventure. Towering gorges slice through the White Mountains, the Libyan Sea stretches endlessly to the south, and a wild interior waits to be explored by jeep, by bike and on foot. Whether you're chasing adrenaline or simply the feeling of being truly alive outdoors, Chania delivers.

🥾 Hiking & Gorges

The mountains around Chania are crisscrossed with gorges carved over millions of years. From the world-famous to the blissfully hidden, these trails reward every kind of hiker.

🏔️ Samaria Gorge
Challenging
16 km 5–7 hours May–October Entry fee: €10

The crown jewel of Cretan hiking and the longest gorge in Europe. The trail descends from the Omalos Plateau through ancient pine and cypress forests, squeezing at one point through the legendary Iron Gates — a passage just three metres wide with walls rising 300 metres on either side. Keep an eye out for the Kri-Kri, the rare Cretan wild goat found nowhere else on earth.

Pro tip: Start as early as possible — the gate opens at 6am. The last entrance is 3pm. Bring at least 2 litres of water, sunscreen and solid walking shoes. The hike ends at Agia Roumeli beach where a ferry takes you back to civilisation.

🌿 Imbros Gorge
Easy–Moderate
8 km 2.5 hours All year Free entry

Samaria's quieter, more accessible cousin — and arguably more dramatic in places. The gorge narrows to just 1.5 metres at its tightest point and passes through landscape that's barely changed in centuries. Historically, Imbros was the escape route for Allied soldiers retreating to the coast during the Battle of Crete in 1941. You can walk it solo, with no guide needed.

🦋 Agia Irini Gorge
Easy
7.5 km 3 hours All year Small fee

One of the most underrated hikes on the island. Shaded by ancient plane trees and alive with birdsong, Agia Irini is perfect for families and those who want the gorge experience without the physical demands of Samaria. The lush scenery is at its best in spring when wildflowers carpet the path.

🌊 Water Sports & Sea Adventures

With coastline on both the Aegean and the Libyan Sea, Chania is blessed with some of the finest conditions for water sports in the entire Mediterranean.

🏄 Windsurfing & Kitesurfing
Intermediate
Best spots: Agia Marina, Falasarna May–October

The Meltemi winds that blow across western Crete from July to September create near-perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Falasarna beach, with its consistent afternoon winds and wide open space, is one of the best spots in Greece. Equipment rental and lessons are readily available for all levels.

🤿 Scuba Diving & Snorkelling
All levels
Best spots: Akrotiri, Almyrida May–October

The northern bay of Chania hides a remarkable underwater world — ancient anchors, hidden caves, colourful reefs and marine life that flourishes in the clear Aegean waters. The Elephant's Cave near Almyrida is a highlight for certified divers, while beginners can take a discover scuba session in calm, shallow waters off Falasarna.

🚣 Sea Kayaking
Easy
Venetian Harbour, Kalathas Beach April–October

Paddle around the Venetian Harbour for a completely unique perspective of Chania's historic waterfront — the old lighthouse, the sea walls, the colourful harbour-front buildings — all viewed from the water. For a more wild experience, guided kayak tours along the Akrotiri Peninsula take you to sea caves and hidden coves accessible only by water.

🚙 Land Adventures

🚙 Jeep Safari — White Mountains
No experience needed
Full day Year-round Small groups

The road network covers only a fraction of Chania's interior — meaning the wildest and most spectacular landscapes are only accessible by 4x4. Private jeep tours take you deep into the White Mountains, through forgotten Cretan villages, past ancient olive groves and across landscapes that feel completely untouched by modern life. Many tours include stops at Elafonisi lagoon and Falasarna beach.

Did you know? The White Mountains (Lefka Ori) contain over 50 gorges and were used as a hideout by Cretan resistance fighters during WWII. Some villages were not connected to the road network until the 1970s.

🪂 Paragliding over Chania
Tandem — no experience needed
~30 minutes flight Year-round

Launching from the foothills of the White Mountains, tandem paragliding flights over Chania offer a perspective of the island that almost no one gets to see — the turquoise sweep of the bay, the maze of the Old Town, the mountains dropping steeply to the sea. Experienced pilots handle everything; you simply sit back and take it all in.

🚴 E-Bike Tours
Easy–Moderate
Half day or full day Year-round

The electric assist makes it possible to tackle terrain that would be exhausting on a regular bike — including the climb to the dramatic Theriso Gorge, birthplace of the 1905 Cretan Revolution. E-bike tours combine the freedom to explore at your own pace with the ability to cover serious ground without arriving at every stop completely exhausted.
